It's funny. Let's look at three examples. Feminists, hippies and left wingers. They all have something in common. You know what that is? People have this awful tendancy to look down on them.

Feminists. Well let's see - they believe in equality for women. They believe that women should have the same rights and pay as men and should generally be treated fairly. That's not a particularly unreasonable thing to want, but somehow they get these reputations as really ugly hairy legged lesbians who want to kill all men and keep them in battery cages for the simple purpose of survival of the species. That is both unreasonable and completely ridiculous, and yet it is just such a common misconception. Astounding.

Hippies - All the people believe in is peace and love and being happy and taking some happy drugs that don't really hurt anyone, and trying to stop the government from bombing the shit out of all these countries. They end up with a reputation of being smelly, dirty, unhygenic, stupid freaks. Just not fair really is it?

Left wingers - Well the thing about left wingers is that they tend to be nice people. For instance, right wingers believe in the rich being very rich and the poor being very poor, left wingers want it to be more fair and equal so nobody has to suffer. Left wingers believe in equality for all, right wingers believe in equality for all white middle class males. Left wingers believe in freedom of speech and of the press, right wingers believe that people aren't clever enough to work things out for themselves and therefore must be protected through means of censorship.

My theory is that left wingers tend to be nice people and right wingers tend to be bastards, and yet, again, left wingers get labelled idealistic freaks and nobody has any respect for them even though they just want the world to be more fair and nice.

I mean surely it's better to be an idealistic freak than to just give in and let the world suck as much as it does right now.
